Honor Society got a quick mention in a short review, the full version will be out tomorrow, so hopefully they get another mention:
First impression: Jonas Brothers at the BJCC Arena
Posted by Mary Colurso -- Birmingham News August 16, 2009 11:03 PM
I am trying, ever so hard, to cultivate the mindset of an adolescent girl.
She is media saturated and computer savvy, yet still capable of being thrilled when a trio of pop-rock stars from the Disney Channel comes to Birmingham.
She is the target audience for the Jonas Brothers, and on this occasion, her parents have splurged on a concert ticket that costs nearly $90. She already owns the CDs, the T-shirts, the posters, the buttons, the keychains.
In her seat at the BJCC Arena, she has a glow-stick around her neck and the word "Joe," "Kevin" or "Nick" printed on her cheek in black marker. She is ready to scream, enthusiastically and often.
Such a preteen fan, I imagine, must have been extremely satisfied by the Jonas Brothers' 8:15 p.m. show.
Maybe she'd be slightly disappointed that one of the opening acts, "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks, didn't perform as planned. (Honor Society, a wholesome foursome from New Jersey, delivered a set, and so did Wonder Girls, an Asian dance-pop troupe.)
But the JoBros were the main attraction, and they delivered everything our girl might have expected during a 90-minute performance. That is: a bunch of bouncy, earnest hits; lots of movement and action;, a loud, ebullient band; splashy special effects on a high-tech stage. And cuteness -- cuteness galore.
Now, what happens when I flip back to the brain of an adult music reviewer -- someone with no kids to please, who's keeping a critical distance, looking and listening closely?
On the boy-band scale, the Jonas Brothers slip from a perfect 10 to about a six.
